Cannes Golden Palm short film award 2006 , was won by Sniffer
Cannes is known for its film festivals and Norway for its Mountains and Fjords. So it came as a surprise, when in 2006, they were awarded the coveted Golden Palm award at the annual film festival.
The film “Sniffer” gave Norway its first ever Cannes Golden Palm award, and the international jury all agreed it was a worthy winner. The film hasn’t any dialogue and really doesn’t need any either. Because of this, it can be shown anywhere in the world without dubbing or subtitles. It’s not easy to imagine a world without gravity, but this film gives you some idea of what the world would be like if there wasn’t any. The characters in the film have to wear heavy boots, lined with lead, to enable them to walk around. In the opening scene, a man awakes one morning on his bedroom ceiling. His wife is sleeping strapped to her bed. She hears the sound of a lamp bulb breaking, and when she looks up and sees him there, she puts her lead boots on, unbuckles her straps, and with the help of a boat hook, she pulls him off the ceiling. He has a very boring job as a deodorant tester, and everyday he takes the bus to the factory, where he spends the rest of the day sniffing the armpits of overweight and sweating test subjects. On this particular day, something happens that changes the rest of his life forever. As you know, if you have browsed through this website, I have lived in Norway for over 30 years. I was really proud when they won the Golden Palm award, but I was really very proud for another reason. The man who wrote, produced and directed the film, was our Son Bobbie Peers.
