Moonshine is still a popular hobby in Norway

Moonshine is quite easy to make, if you know how.

Don’t take this too seriously, but I just thought if it is relevant to this website, then why not write about it. So read on.

Of course it is not allowed to make your own spirit, but if it is made solely for your own use and not for selling for a profit, the local police tend to turn a blind eye; `

The usual procedure is acquire a 30 liter plastic drum. The type used for making wine.

Fill the container with cold water to about 15 cm from top. Into the container add 2 or 3 liters of juice of your choice. Personally I would choose orange juice. Then add 4kg sugar and 10 packets of brewers yeast.

When the yeasting is finished, about 2 weeks, or when you don’t see any more bubbling then transfer the mix to your still.

When the raw spirit starts to drip out of the end of the tube, you must regulate the drip with less cooling water or with a current regulator.

The raw spirit should be over 80 per cent pure. Run the spirit through a coal filter to get rid of the impurities, then add water until is reduced to 40 per cent. To do this use an alcohol meter. All that is left to do is bottle it.

By the way, I bet you didn’t know that in New Zealand, Moonshining is quite legal.

Cheers
