The Northern Lights are so Magical

The Northern Lights are incredible.Nearly everybody I talk to when on holiday in the UK, asks me about them.

My answer is always the same. You have to experience them to describe them, and to describe them is almost impossible. Having said this, I will do my absolute best to explain to you one of the most spectacular and beautiful sights on our planet.

The best and most relaxing way to experience the them is of course a guided tour. These tours can be arranged from your own country, or if you are already in Norway, from all the main Cities.

We have experienced this magical phenomenon while visiting the northern City of Tromsø. Tromsø is situated right in the centre of the Lights zone.

When I first saw the lights it was like observing a beautiful ballet. They seemed to dance and move so elegantly through the sky and they seemed to bathe in wonderful heavenly green pastel colours and I’m sure there was the slightest hint of pink too.

These lights are a phenomenon originating from the suns surface. At times there are violent storms raging on the surface of the sun and super charged particles are rocketed into outer space. Quite a lot of them reach the Earth’s magnetic field near the North Pole. These particles join the outer perimeter of the atmosphere above the surface of our planet.

The energy discharged becomes visible on the earths surface, and you may compare it to strobe or moving lights you sometimes see at a theatre, a stage musical for example.

Look at this video clip. It is so enthralling and heavenly it brought tears to my eyes

Your best chance of seeing the Lights in Tromsø is from the middle of October to about the middle of March. It is dark here during the 7 pm to midnight time frame, so this is definitely your best bet to see the lights.

From the end of April until middle of August it is to light to see the Northern Lights here.

Once again a word of warning :-( there are no guarantees that you will see this marvelous light show. There must be storms on the sun’s surface and of course there should be no cloud cover.

Trømsø is a beautiful City, so spend a week here; you won’t be disappointed I assure you. You also have much better chance to see the lights if you are here for a few days.

If you haven’t arrived here on a guided tour basis and you are out for adventure, then why not choose some of the outdoor activities on offer.

Take an excursion by bus to Skjervøy then return to Tromsø on the Costal Express Steamer. The ship travels in complete darkness and has excellent viewing lounges, this makes it possible to sit inside on comfortable seats, and maybe you will be the first one to shout `look there are the lights` ;-)

The Northern Lights hosts also offer to take you to the darkest places and even provide a traditional Sami tent with an open fire, a bun and a hot drink.

If you are young and active why not take a reindeer sleigh ride or cross-country snowshoeing. There are lots to do in this wonderful city.
