The Sardine Factory

I suggest you pop into the Sardine Factory if you find yourself strolling along the cobbled streets of The Old Town,

It is really very interesting in this museum to see and hear the process from start to finish.

There is even an English guide there who is extremely knowledgeable and he takes you through the whole process in a very nice understandable way.

The canning industry was a very important business for Stavanger from the beginning of 1900 to about 1960.

Through this exhibition you will get a very good idea what sort of conditions and environment the people worked under.

You are shown in detail, the process from when the fresh Bristling is delivered to the factory, until the sardines are packed tightly in cans and transported to the warehouse.

It’s incredible to think that many of the machinery used in the production process was made in local mechanical workshops.

The tin cans and rubber seals were produced in the this factory as you will see. Fishing nets, olive oil, labels and wooden crates are examples of products obtained elsewhere. The machines in the museum are still in very good condition, and in the summer season on the first Sunday in the month, as well as Tuesdays and Thursdays, they light the smoke ovens and you can taste the delicious smoked sardines straight out of the oven.

After The Sardine Factory, click for some fresh air :-)
