Right now in the month May, the russ make a lot of things happen

Right now in the month May russ make a lot of a lot of things happen in Norway

All students graduating from upper secondary schools, celebrate with all sorts of festivities. It starts on Mayday and going on to 17th May national day.

This tradition goes all the way back to the 1700s, when there was no universities in Norway, and Norwegians had to attend the University of Copenhagen.

To be enrolled at this time, students had to pass the Examen Artium. After completing these examinations, horns were placed on their foreheads and the older students made fun of them.

Their horns would be removed only when they indulged in a ceremony called Examen Depositiones and passed the test they were given. From that point, these young people had the right to call themselves students.

The colour of the caps and traditional uniforms usually reflect what type of study the student has chosen. In some regions the actual colour is determined by the school.

Redruss :-(general studies) (mathematics, physics, biology, history, literature, English etc); media and communication, art, music, dance and drama; and athletics. This is by far the most common colour.

Blueruss:- Health care and Economical & Administrative studies

Blackruss:- Courses like electronics or carpentry. As Norwegian vocational studies consist of 2 years of schooling and 1 or 2 years of apprenticeship, blackruss can choose to celebrate at the end of school, at the end of the apprenticeship, or both. Some redruss choose black in order to stand out. Greenruss:- Agricultural courses, also used by some as an alternative to orangeruss.

These students do some crazy things to earn knots for their uniforms and hats. The list for the russes knots was first introduced in the 1940s. These knots signify that the person has accomplished a certain task during his russ period.

Counting both national and local lists, there can be hundreds of different tasks that can be performed to gain knots. The knot tasks are very often criticized because of the involvement of illegal acts, such as streaking or public sexual acts, and possibly self-harming actions by consuming large amounts of alcohol in the shortest time.

There was an arrest just recently in our district at the local students festival. Four girls trying to earn knots held a first year student down and cut her string panties off. They are now awaiting trial for common assault.

This is the official Studentruss song in Norway
